General Sponsorship Information
The internship program is designed to give our junior or senior students the opportunity for career exploration. Although most positions involve writing, research, and editing, all placements enable students to learn new skills, explore career interests, and encounter new social and intellectual challenges. The best placements should include the following:
- A clearly delineated position description
- Duties and responsibilities carefully outlined and not limited to clerical work
- Provision of a specific work area for the intern
- Interaction with a range of personnel within the organizational culture
- Opportunities for feedback and discussion
Internships should involve 120 hours of writing-based work and may be paid or unpaid. Students are encouraged to view the internship as an opportunity for a learning experience with long-range benefits. While involved in the internship students will be enrolled in ENC 4944, an online course designed to focus students’ observations of professional practices and to reflect on their professional growth.
Use the online Student Performance Evaluation to submit your assessment and comments in a secure paperless format. The link will be sent to you by e-mail by the internship coordinator two weeks before the end of the semester. We encourage you to review your evaluation with the student intern to discuss both areas of strength as well as areas where the student can improve and develop in future internship or employment situations.
Use the linked Internship Position Form to complete the full description of the intern position you have available; complete a separate form for each position available. Email the completed form to the writing internship coordinator. Once the position is approved, we will post it to our Current Intern Opportunities list and send an announcement to our students.
