Writing Across the Curriculum Program

The Writing Across the Curriculum program (WAC) is an interdisciplinary program coordinated by the Department of Writing and Rhetoric that promotes, supports, and assesses writing across the curriculum at UCF. The program works on a grassroots level to strengthen existing writing efforts and requirements; respond flexibly to demonstrated faculty and student writing needs; and enable comprehensive, vertical writing experiences for UCF students.

Renovations are beginning in Fall 2011 to house the Writing Across the Curriculum program and the University Writing Center on the first floor of Colbourn Hall.

While the Writing Center directly supports students, the Writing Across the Curriculum program directly supports faculty from across the university in their efforts to help students learn through and about writing. Ideally, this support leads to collaborative grant and research opportunities for faculty interested in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

Beginning Fall 2011, the Writing Across the Curriculum Program Director Pavel Zemliansky, Ph.D., and Coordinator Lindee Owens will begin implementing a support model that includes:

  • Faculty workshops about teaching and assessing writing
  • One-on-one consultations with faculty
  • Assistance with proposing, implementing, and assessing Gordon Rule writing courses
  • Assistance in developing writing-related modules for large, mixed-mode, and/or web courses
  • A Faculty Fellows in Residence Program that compensates faculty for undertaking intensive writing-related training and for creating corresponding support materials for their departments and colleges
